Your Health & Climate Change: An Evening of Discovery and Questions
With "Aggie" Black, RN & Dr. Tim Takaro from the Faculty of Health Sciences at SFU__ April 11th at 6:30 pm @ Trinity Memorial Church, 33737 George Ferguson Way
Agnes (Aggie) Black is an RN, healthcare researcher, and recently retired healthcare leader.  She is on the national board of the Canadian Association for Nurses for the Environment and the board of the New Westminster Climate Action Hub.  She is an adjunct professor at the UBC School of Nursing and Research Associate at the UBC Centre for Advancing Health Outcomes.

Dr Tim Takaro is a professor emeritus and physician-scientist at the Faculty of Health Sciences at SFU.  His research is primarily about the links between human exposures and disease, and planetary health.  With immense gratitude to the First Peoples, he is beginning to use Indigenous knowledge to relearn environmental health as he tests different interventions in climate action and planet protection.

The United Church Earth Stewards has five member churches who have worked together since 2019.  Our interest is in finding concrete ways to support the health of our planet in the midst of climate change.  Our main focus has been on planting trees in partnership with the City of Abbotsford.  Fundraisers made it possible to plant over 2,000 trees and counting.  This year, it is our intention to plant trees along salmon bearing streams to cool the water for salmon fry.  We donated money for trees for Lytton and support Rail for the Valley, along with other environmental initiatives.

Agnes (Aggie) Black will give a half hour presentation that focuses on health and climate change.  Following the presentation, Tim Takaro will answer your questions.  Then everyone is invited to gather in the church hall (not sure what the upstairs room off the sanctuary is called....but you will know) for light refreshments and conversation.  This will be an additional opportunity to make a donation towards trees if you haven't already.

donations: All proceeds from donations will purchase trees that are most likely to thrive in our changing climate.  We accept cash, cheques, and credit cards at the door, and later, as refreshments are enjoyed.  All donations of $20 and more will receive a tax receipt in time to file your 2026 tax returns.

The United Church Earth Stewards (UCES) consists of a group of members from the five Churches of the Central Fraser Valley: Trinity Memorial, Gladwin Heights and Mt. Lehman in Abbotsford, Aldergrove United in Aldergrove and St. Andrew’s United in Mission.   The group raises funds for the planting of trees, which we do in conjunction with the City of Abbotsford. We also promote advocacy in several areas: including light rail, protection of salmon habitat, reporting on local environmental pollution and a number of other issues. We support others in their climate advocacy.  Over the past 6 years, we have planted close to 2,000 trees. The mission of this passionate group is to fulfill the statement in the New Creed: “to live with respect in creation”.
